In 1986, in Labda—a rain-drenched, sunlit village tucked near Darjeeling—six friends, Karnabahadur, Tshering, Ambar, Buddha, Rajvir and Sarita, grow up together, sharing classrooms and the familiar rhythms of village life. But beyond Labda, unrest is gathering. The movement for a separate state of Gorkhaland is gaining momentum, and it is only a matter of time before its violence reaches their doorstep.

As the Andolan engulfs the hills, the world they know begins to fracture. Students turn against teachers, neighbours and families find themselves divided by political loyalties, and neutrality becomes impossible. Everyone must choose a side—or risk being driven from the only home they have ever known.

Spanning three decades, This Place of Mud and Bone traces the lives of these six friends as they are shaped, separated and scarred by a political struggle that changes form but never truly disappears. Karnabahadur becomes the feared Angulimaal, leaving Buddha with an unimaginable choice. Tshering’s life descends from violence into madness, while Ambar’s story ends in tragedy and Sarita finds herself selling eggs in a hospital.

Through their intertwined lives, the novel becomes more than the story of six people. It is also a portrait of the Darjeeling hills and of ordinary communities learning to survive extraordinary violence. At its heart is a haunting exploration of friendship, loyalty, displacement and the ways political conflict can quietly reshape a person’s destiny—and how, even amid fear and devastation, human determination can become a force of its own.
